What do a police officer, a grave digger, a basketball coach, a mayor, and identical twins have in common? They're all part of Jewish Hartford. Our Community. Our Stories., a groundbreaking new photo exhibit by acclaimed photographer Steven Laschever, from December 7, 2025-January 23, 2026, at the Chase Family Gallery, Mandell JCC in West Hartford, CT.
Nearly 50 striking portraits and tableaus reveal a Jewish community that's anything but predictable—diverse, vibrant, and full of surprises. It's the side of our community you've never seen… and won't forget.

Shining a Light
Jewish Hartford: Our Community. Our Stories. began with a simple idea: to hold up a mirror to our community and see who we are today. It is more than a collection of photographs—it is an invitation to pause and see: to recognize the beauty of our diversity, the strength of our connections, and the spirit that endures across generations. Through more than fifty black-and-white portraits and tableaus, it offers a mosaic of Jewish life in Greater Hartford.
Stripped of color, the images bring expression and presence to the forefront, each paired with words that root them in story—of family, tradition, and belonging. The selections were made with care to reflect a broad spectrum of experience: elders who carry memory, children who embody the future, newcomers and lifelong residents, those deeply rooted in Jewish practice, and those connected through culture, heritage, or family. This project also honors the people of other faiths and backgrounds who share their lives within our community.
Together, these portraits remind us of the beauty of belonging, the strength of community, and the enduring spirit of Jewish Hartford.

I love making images. Long lasting images. But for most of my career, my work had a short shelf life. Not anymore.
With this project, I wanted to capture the character—and maybe even the spirit—of each person I photographed.
A simple moment made permanent. And through these images, I aimed to show a Jewish community with people from all walks of life, all backgrounds, identities, and experiences—a collection that reflects our diverse as our community as a whole. Do these images explain what it means to be part of Jewish Hartford? Absolutely! Kind of? You decide.
Sometimes a photo says what words can’t. Why black and white images?
It wasn’t always easy—I love color photography—but taking color away lets the people, the faces, the moments, really stand out. The faces are what draw me in. The connection, the trust, the little unspoken exchange—it’s a gift, from them to me. The location, the background, the lighting—all play a part, supporting the story, adding dimension, and bringing out details you might otherwise miss.
This project tested every part of my craft. Filling the JCC gallery with these portraits was a dream. Seeing that dream turn into a book has been incredible. I couldn’t have done it alone. My close friend David Jacobs was by my side the whole time, and a talented team handled every detail and every bit of logistics.
Their support made this possible. And to everyone who stepped in front of my camera and shared a piece of themselves—thank you.
There’s so much about Jewish Hartford—I couldn’t capture it all—but I’m honored to have tried.
